Olga de Amaral: el manto de la memoria

Olga de Amaral’s work reveals this influence. However, unlike so many artists, she does not approach the problem from the point of view of painting, nor does she seek the solution on the object’s side or through volume. Rather, she begins with the material itself —the painting’s support, the canvas, the fabric or texture— and develops its possibilities in the direction of painting and sculpture. Unfortunately art history has a tendency of taking a specific work as its starting point, regardless of the artist’s actual questions. This explains why it has remained practically mute on the subject of tapestry.

El trabajo de Olga de Amaral se inscribe en este movimiento, pero en lugar de tomar el problema a partir de la pintura, buscando una salida desde el objeto y el volumen, como lo hace la mayoría, ella parte del material mismo, del color, de la tela, del tejido, de la textura, desarrollando sus posibilidades hacia la pintura y la escultura. La historia del arte, infortunadamente, ha tenido siempre el hábito de pensar únicamente a partir de la pintura y no de los interrogantes que los artistas proponen a su alrededor. De allí su silencio, la mayor parte del tiempo, sobre la tapicería.
