129 SELECT CHRONOLOGY 1932 Olga Ceballos Vélez is born in Bogotá, Colombia, to Juan de Dios Ceballos and Carolina Vélez de Ceballos. She is the sixth child in a family of eight children (fig. 1). 1952 Vélez excels at mathematics and drawing in high school and, after graduation, attends the Colegio Mayor de Cundinamarca in Bogotá, where she earns a bachelor’s degree in architectural drafting. 1953 After receiving her degree, she serves for a year as the director of the Architectural Design Department at the Colegio Mayor de Cundinamarca in Bogotá. 1954 Vélez moves to New York City to study English at Columbia University. In fall 1954, she enrolls at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where she spends a year studying weaving and textiles with the Modernist textile designer Marianne Strengell. 1955 At the end of her final semester at Cranbrook, Vélez exhibits her textiles at the annual student exhibition at Cranbrook Academy of Art (fig. 2). 1955 Vélez returns to her home in Bogotá and sets up a studio, initially supplying hand- made textiles and designs for interiors, furniture, and fashion.
